11 Days in Genoa
Day 1 - Getting acquainted with the City
In the first day, you just savour the city to get a first taste of its overwhelming diversity
Start the day like an Italian with a coffee in the buzzling city center
Taste the sea by the best Fritti Misti for lunch
Take Tour 2 to get a glimpse of what the city has to offer
Have an aperitivo and diner al fresco
09:00 - The discovery of Genova starts right after leaving your apartment. Walk down the typical red brick alley ('salita' in Italian) and a magnificent view on Genova will unfold. You can see the world's oldest lighthouse still in function straight in front of you, as well as the rest of the porto antico. To the left, you can marvel the medieval city center. Walk to the entrance of the main railway station, your gate to the Ligurian coast and major Italian cities. Either have a coffee at the kiosk or later in the city. You can find here the statue of Cristoforo Colombo, citizen of this city. Walk down the via Balbi where the University of Genova is concentrated, as well as the Palazzo Reale or Royal Palace, first of many palaces of this city. At the Piazza della Nunziata, enter the marvellous temple like Basilic. Walk further into the historical city center by taking the Via Lomellini. The Piazza Fossatello is another quaint place for a coffee or foccaccia snack. Particularly the century old Pasticceria Marescotti is worth checking out. Walk to the Piazza San Matteo where you can buy the best Focaccia with local cheese in Il Ristoro dei Grimaldi.
12:00 - Time for lunch and why not trying out some genuine local food at dump prices. Zimino is a hugely popular lunch spot that offers the typical fried seafood at the best price of the Ligurian coast.
Day 2 - Rolli Day
The history & architecture of Genova's palaces (called 'Rolli') are so exceptional that they have been recognized by Unesco as part of our World Heritage - today we will discover them.
Start the day with a coffee & croissant at the fancy Pasticceria Mangini and start Tour1 that takes you to the several palaces.
You can admire the palazzi from the outside, but even better visit some of their rich interiors. There are special 'Rolli Days' when many private palaces open to the public, others are constantly open such as Palazzo Principe, Palazzo Reale & Palazzo Spinola (photo above) with a remarkable Rubens painting)
Via Garibaldi is the hotspot for the Rolli Palazzi. You can easily spent half a day with the visiting Palazzo Rosso, Bianco & Doria-Tursi which hosts the famous violin of Nicolo Paganini, another illustrious citizin of this city.
End your day savouring an aperitivo or full diner in a palace setting - book a table for instance at Les Rouges
Day 3 - Porto Antico & Lanterno
Genova has been a naval power for many centuries and today we are going to discover it
Start the day by heading down the Caricamento. It's a unique medieval gallery where goods have been unshipped and stored.
Stroll through tjhePorto Antico and its many attractions: the Bigo (or alternatively take for free the elevator to Eataly for a similar view), the Magazzino del Cottone, the Biophere, the replica of the 17th centry galley, the submarine and for sure the interesting Museum of Naval History (Galata)
After a seafood lunch, you can walk Tour 4 in opposite direction discovering the way fo the Knights, the emigration Museum & Genova's city landmark, the Lanterno or lighthous which you visit for spectular view
Walk back to the Porto Antico and have dinner in Molo, a particual fisher quarter - particular recommendation for Osteria di Vico Palla
Day 4 - Acquario & The Forts
Genova is a rising amphitheatre from the sea. Today, we are experiencing this by starting at the sea to visit the famous Acquarium and then we will climb the forts
Visit the famous acquarium of Genova
Go to the funicilar stop to take this free, cute means of transport up to Granarolo. As of their you can walk to Forte Begato or any other Fort
Spend some time in the park high above the city with nice views and priceless shadow
Finish the day on a high by visiting the iconic pizzeria in the high Righi suburbs (make sure to book ahead). It has a nice view ove the city and you can directly next its location the free hill train back to downtown.
Day 5 - A day at the sea
Enough culture - time for the beach.
Stroll the 'passegiato' at Genoa's beach promenade
You can a (lenghty) walk for Genova's city right upto a typical fisher's harbour of Liguria by walking down the Corso Italia up to Bocadessa. Once arrive, indulge yourself with fried seafood, a pizza or an ice cream.
If you want to go swimming, here are some tips. The easiest is to take in Principe a 13 minute train ride to Genova Quarto, then a 3 minute walk to the public beach of Priaruggia.
Another option is to take the train 1 stop to Genova Brignole then take the bus 31 'Lido di Genova', a private beach with many facilities, swimming pool, .... It takes 37' from door to beach. Private beaches are a bit pricey for a day, but it might be worthwile.
Close the day with an aperitivo at sunset on beats in an open air Beach Club such as Bagni Sillo in Sori or the closerby Monu Café.
Day 6 - Medieval Genoa
Genova boosts to have the largest medieval center of Europe and today we are going to discover it
Enter the medieval town via the impressive Porta Soprana
Take Tour3 that winds through the medieval alleys of the historical center.
Not medieval as only a century old , yet built by a retired sea captain with too much money who wanted to live the medieval way. Castello d'Albertis is a must visit close by the apartement and situated in a marvelous palm garden.
Go for once for a beer in the evening. Kamunlab (Nice beer pub with good snacks after 5:30pm) and Scrurreria Beer & Bagel are the local favourites.
Day 7 - Staglieno & Nervi
Head east for a monumental cemetery & botanic gardens
Head to Staglieno, Italy's most iconic classic cemetery that rivals Paris' Père-Lachaise
Take a train to Nervi and 15 minutes later you can walk from park to park.
Make sure you do the Passeggiate Anita Garibaldi that ends up in small port where you can canoe or swim. Followed by a delicious ice cream.
Finish the day with an aperitivo and pizza at the sea side
Day 8 - Off the beaten track
Genova is the ideal city for people with no plan
Genoa is city of many surprises. Just walk around in Genova, take an alley up and stairs down. There's always a discovery around the corner.
Visit lesser known yet interesting museums such as the Villa Croce museum of modern art.
Head for your aperitivo to the Mescite wine bar where you can savour various local wines directly from the silos.
While you are in the interesting neigborhood of Carmine, have for once a non Italian dinner in the renovated old iron Mercato del Carmine
Day 9 - Narrow gauge train to Casella
Today we explore furhter the hills surrounding Genova helped by Italy's oldest locomotive
Genova is a paradise for rail lovers and this one beats everything. Experience a (free) public elevator that first travels horizontally before you need to switch for the verticular rise
Take the special train to Casella througt tunnels, over viaducs - all of this in a bucolic landscape
Combine it with a climb to the spectacular setting of the Forte Diamante
Time for an urban aperitivo after a long day
Day 10 - 19th Century Genova
Dive into the glamourous, century old 'new' part of Genova for Italian high street shopping & good
Head for Genova's main square 'Piazza Ferrari' at the heart of the city and have a morning coffee as the city wakes up. You can visit an exhibition at the Palazzo Ducale or start already shopping on the Via XX Septembre
Genova has a number of fresh food markets but nothing beats the Mercato Orientale (MOG) where you can find the best ingredients that Italy can offer. In the middle is food court to have an excellent lunch for no money.
Shop till you drop on XX Septembre where you can find all major brands. Don't forget to pass by Via San Vicenzo for some less pricy shopping in a pedestrian area. If you want a break, stroll in the nearby Parco Francesco Coco

Day11 - Pegli & Navebus
We are heading West to Pegli and wil come back via the sea
Visit the beautiful Villa Durazzo Pallavicini, one of the many century old mansions around Genova
Spend the afternoon enjoying the Ligurian seaside
Take the Navebus back from Pegli right into the Porto Antico of Genova - this allows you to get a view right into one of Europe's main ports & cruise terminals. There is hardly a better view on Genova than arriving by sea at sunset.
Why not grabbing some local food for dinner. Our favourite one is the Rosticceria Madallena.
